Skarø
Skarø is located at the mouth of Svendborg Sound and is a low moraine island, partially protected by dikes and the characteristic Skarø Reef.
The Island's Distinctive Features
Skarø By is located just a few hundred meters from the harbor and is a charming little village consisting of beautiful half-timbered houses surrounding the village pond. Skarø Church is situated on the island's highest point with fine views over the archipelago. Footpaths across fields and along the coasts make it easy to explore the island on foot or by bike. Despite its relatively small size, the island has its own festival, a large nature campsite, island camps, and an ice factory.
The Ice Age Landscape on Skarø
Skarø has several Holocene marine forelands with salt marshes, beach ridges, and headlands. Most characteristic is the 900-meter-long narrow spit, Skarø Odde (Skarø Reef). On the west coast, there is a small, low cliff with Weichselian moraine clay.
The Flyer Grave on Skarø
At Skarø Cemetery, two English soldiers are buried. They were part of the crew of an English plane that was bombed by the Germans on February 15, 1944, between Tåsinge and Skarø. That night, the war came to Skarø. The air war was raging over the island, and a plane crashed. There wasn't much left of the plane itself, as most of it was scattered over the sea between Østerhoved and Vornæs. The tail fin fell on Skarø, hitting Axel Eriksen's rear house. Two killed airmen lay at the water's edge at Østerhoved, where they were pulled onto the beach and covered. Merchant Kresten Madsen was ordered by the Germans to transport the two dead young men to Skarø cemetery, where they were buried by the German military. Both the priest on Drejø and the inhabitants of Skarø were denied access to participate. The next evening, all the inhabitants of Skarø gathered around the grave, where they sang a hymn and covered the grave with flowers.
The Commonwealth War Commission erected the official RAF iron cross on the grave. After the war, the people of Skarø collected money for a proper gravestone with an inscription. The original RAF iron cross was removed on that occasion. The stone was inaugurated in the spring of 1946, with the visit of 10 English soldiers.
Skarø Ice
Skarø has its own ice cream - Skarø Ice. From the outside, it's an idyllic family café, but behind the production lies research and a high-tech development business. There are over 70 recipes, all without lactose, gluten, and E-numbers. Skarø Ice is gourmet ice cream, produced with an understanding of nature's ingredients, preserving flavor and consistency in the ice.
SommerSild
SommerSild operates the island's tent and shelter site and rents out cabins. The farm shop sells lamb meat/skins and locally produced food.
On the island, there are several cozy artisans, as well as an archipelago museum with a guesthouse, community center, and marina with a triangular soccer field and a playground by the water's edge.
